Actions taken throughout “plastic bag free week”
A truck full of waste (mainly plastic bags) has been collected on Sunday 06.05.2016 during the cleanup of the path to Pherecydes’ Cave, with the participation of “Hikers Club of Syros” and of the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Marios Voutsinos! We thank them wholeheartedly for struggling under the hot sun for this action, which we hope will stand as the starting point for many other essential actions. Our reward has been the smell of sage that covered the smell from an inconceivable number of dispersed plastic bags and other lightweight plastic materials which were drifting by the wind and piled this lovely area that has the misfortune to be located near the sanitary landfill.
At the same time, part of LIFE DEBAG and CYCLADES LIFE staff members took part in the beach litter cleanup action in the northern coasts of Syros, organized by the “Inflatable and speed-boats’ club of Syros”.
Finally, on the evening, we have created a story in the enchanting Ano Syros. A sea between two castles, two princesses, a plastic and a woven bag… And a war that has packed the sea with plastic bombs… And finally…peace. We have created a story that moves in the space of the imaginary but reflects the real wishful thinking. Does the bag fly? And where does itgo?
On Saturday 06.04.2016, the LIFE DEBAG Project has participated in the action of cleaning the Gyaros Island coasts, event organized by the parallel Life project called Cyclades LIFE, in which the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Marios Voutsinos, and bodies such as “Inflatable and speed-boats’ club of Syros”have also participated. Besides cleaning the coasts, a detailed scientific recording of waste has taken place, in order to study the composition and the origin of their sources! Thanks Cyclades LIFE!
On the Saturday evening, in Miaoulis central square of Syros, we have sent a message with the help of music: Leave plastic bags in the past … and not in our seas! Thank you wholeheartedly “Nea Taxi Pragmaton” band for the perfect evening. They have communicated the love for the natural environment and life itself in such a unique way that touched us all!
On Friday 06.03.2016, we have distributed once again free reusable bags to the people that have arrived to the Syros Port and we have collected many smiles indeed!! A special thank you to Nikos Papadakis who has returned once again to Syros Island to support our actions and to Deputy Mayor Marios Voutsinos both for handing out with us free woven bags and for their constant support.
On Thursday 06.02.2016, a training seminar for primary and secondary education teachers has been held at the “Hermoupolis Cultural Center Hall”. During the seminar the educational package developed specifically for the Project has been presented and a discussion took place on the educational program which will be implemented throughout the school year 2016-2017, in all Syros schools.
On Wednesday 06.01.2016, a special presentation for the shop owners on the Project, its targets and the actions of the “Plastic bag free week” has been held at the Ano Syros Municipality Conference Room.
On Tuesday 05.31.2016, members of the Project’s staff have visited the Hermoupolis Market and have informed the owners and the employees of the local shops for the impacts of the single-use plastic bags to the marine environment, the options that they can adopt and offer to their customers and the benefits that they can obtain.
Furthermore, we initiated the research on the waste load on the seafloor and the coastal areas of Lotos, Kini and Hermoupolis, by implementing methods of underwater acoustic and visual scanning (sonar side scanner – underwater sliding camera), as well as aerial remote sensing (drone).
On Monday 30.5.2016 we have travelled to Foinikas, where we have distributed free reusable bags and we have informed the people visiting the local super markets and the local shops on the impacts of plastic bags.
We have recorded and collected marine litter from 4 coasts of Syros Island! We thank the partners involved and the Deputy Mayor Marios Voutsinos who has supported us once again!
We have distributed free reusable bags and we have informed both the citizens visiting the supermarkets and the people arriving by ship at the Port of Syros on the impacts of plastic bags. Nikos Papadakis has participated in our action at the Port! It was a very enjoyable experience and gave us strength to continue!
The press conference to launch the “Plastic bag free week” at the Syros Council Hall has been completed successfully! We thank the Mayor of Syros Mr. Maragos, the Deputy Mayor Mr. Voutsinos (Marios Voutsinos), the President of the “Solid Waste Management Association” Mr. Printezis (Markos Printezis) and of course the “melodic” Mr. Thomaidis and the “celebrity” of the LIFE DEBAG Project Mr. Nikos Papadakis, which have honored us with their presence! A big thank you to Aggeliki Printezi for her valuable assistance on the organization of the press conference. Best wishes for a good start!!!
During the evening, at the Municipal Theatre “Apollo” in Hermoupolis, we sang along with Kostas Thomaidis and pianist John Tsolkas the “Songs of the Sea” and listened to short speeches on “Plastic Sea”, given by University of Patras Professors G. Papatheodorou and Ch. Karapanagiotis.
